Well put. Let me just read you another quote of Pat Robertson's in case
that first wasn't enough.
He said, "You say you're supposed to be nice to Episcopalians and the
Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing .
nonsense. I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can
love the people who hold false opinions, but I don't have to be nice to
them." This is the man who has defined family values for much of America
and has altered the political landscape. That's a little bit of a problem
if you ask me.
In the last election, when people were asked who voted about the issue of
family values, we find that the Republicans had almost a three-to-one
advantage among people who said family values was an important issue. But I
can't believe that most of those people actually understand that Pat
Robertson thinks Episcopalians, Presbyterians, and Methodists are reflective
of the Antichrist.
One can only imagine what he would say about Catholics, Mormons, and it goes
beyond speculation to consider what he would say about Hindus or Buddhists,
or other Americans who are not Christians, much less Jews.
Listen to what Pat Robertson had to say about the role of women: "I know
this is painful for ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have
accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the
household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is,
period."
I don't think most Americans believe that. I think the notion that women
are inferior to men or ought to defer to men in decision making is outside
the mainstream of American thinking. My favorite quote from Pat Robertson
also has to do with women's rights. And if you can imagine how extreme this
quote is, and I don't think most Americans understand these are his views,
but here's what he said about feminists - I don't know how many of the women
out there are feminists; I think a feminist is just a woman who thinks women
deserve equal rights. Nothing more, nothing less . but here's what Pat
Robertson had to say about it.
He said, "The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is
about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to
leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy
capitalism, and become lesbians."
Pat Robertson had Jerry Falwell, the man who was, for all practical
purposes, Ronald Reagan's representative to the radical right on his program
just after the World Trade Center disaster. Jerry Falwell revealed on that
program how intolerant he really is and what he really thinks ought to be
done with people he disagrees with.
He said, "Throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court
system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The
abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be
mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God
mad. The pagans and the abortionists and the feminists and the gays and the
lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the
ACLU, People for the American Way - all of them who have tried to secularize
America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.
'"
God will not be mocked? Gays are responsible for the World Trade Center
disaster because God is punishing us for tolerating them? What should be
done to them, Mr. Falwell? What does not tolerating them mean? Should we
hunt them down, burn them at the stake?
He said these people are trying to secularize America. Well you know what?
America is a secular state. It's a secular state because the last time we
put religion in charge of the state, they started burning people.
Pat Robertson also said, ". the battle is not going to be fought much longer
between Christianity and atheistic humanism, but between Christianity and
satanic-inspired Eastern Religions."
Jerry Falwell said, "Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time
of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they're mad at all
men. Feminists hate men. They're sexist. They hate men - that's their
problem."
Pat Robertson in December of 1997 said, "The National Organization for Women
is saying that in order to be a woman, you've got to be a lesbian." I don't
know how many women out there are members of now, but many of them are
married. I'm married to one and I'm pretty sure she's not a lesbian.
"Just like Nazi Germany did to the Jews, so liberal America is now doing to
the evangelical Christians. It's no different. It is the same thing. It
is happening all over again. It is the Democratic Congress, the
liberal-based media and the homosexuals who want to destroy the Christians,"
Robertson said. He went on, "Wholesale abuse and discrimination and the
worst bigotry directed toward any group in America today. More terrible
than anything suffered by any minority in history."
That's the other thing. Just because we disagree with you doesn't mean that
we're anti-Christian. In fact, many of us who disagree with you are
Christians! And as for the notion that discrimination against the
evangelical Christian is worse than against any minority in history . Mr.
Robertson, there's a little matter of six million Jews who were sent to the
ovens because of their religion, and if you think evangelical Christians are
treated worse than that, you're living in a fantasy world and the rest of us
need to reject what you have to say.
The current White House has accepted these people to the point that just
today the President of the United States named General William G. Boykin to
be the director of anti-terrorism. This man has a view that he is a warrior
for God. This man says that Christians are on a crusade against Islam.
These are not American values, and they upset people all over the world,
just as Robertson, just as Falwell, just as Dobson contradict values that
Americans hold here. He is presenting the face of this radical position to
the rest of the world. It's bad enough that those of us who live here have
to accept it.
